“There once was a man, his name was John, sent by God to point out the way to the Life-Light. He came to show everyone where to look, who to believe in. John was not himself the Light; he was there to show the way to the Light.” John 1:6-8 [MSG].
Most of us, if we’re honest, have wondered from time to time what in the world (literally) are we supposed to be doing in this crazy place? It’s that nagging question, “What is my purpose in life?” or ‘”Why am I here?”
John 1:6 helps us to answer these questions, and I love that the Lord makes it so simple. Let’s look back at the passage above, but this time read it as follows: “There once was a man/woman, his/her name was [Insert Your Name Here], sent by God to point out the way to the Life-Light.” Yes, John the Baptist was most assuredly sent to show the people of his time the way to Jesus. AND, likewise, we are also here to show the people of our day the way to the Lord Jesus, the Light and Life. Each one of us is meant to be a messenger by way of example of the love and power of Christ in us. We are to be walking, talking, and most importantly, loving Christians.
You might be thinking, now hold on a minute, I’m no evangelist. And personally, I don’t consider myself an evangelist (either). I’ve never knocked on a door, or handed out tracks, or done what some would view as “typical” evangelism activity. When I read John 1:6, I thought, surely you don’t mean me Jesus. I wasn’t “sent” or “called” the way that John was plucked out of history to show people to You. But the answer I received was, Oh yes, you are!
Every day you and I have the opportunity to show others the way to Christ. We each communicate a message, even if we are sitting at our desks working, standing at the water-cooler, talking on the telephone with a client, friend or telemarketer, and yes, even driving in traffic. We are the hands, feet, and voice of Jesus to this lost world. What will your message be today?
I was on a run a while back and de-compressing after a long day. As I was running, I was trying to memorize one of my favorite tunes by Mercy Me. The song is entitled, “Won’t You Be My Love.” As God would have it, the timing of my hearing this song goes seamlessly with the timing of this blog entry (don’t you just love it when that happens?). This is a song about Jesus asking us to lead others to His cross. The chorus of the song goes, “Won’t you be My voice calling? Won’t you be My hands healing? Won’t you be My feet walking, into a broken world. Wont you be My chain breaker?, Won’t you be My peace-maker? Won’t you be My hope and joy? Won’t you be My love?” My prayer is that we would all answer these questions with a resounding, YES!
Insert YOUR name into John 1:6. Be the messenger of the Love of Jesus to everyone in your world today.
