Weight Loss Tips!
By Kathryn Leonard –
Gaining weight is not something most of us get excited about. When holidays come around we brace ourselves for the final tally of calories to be revealed on the dreaded scale. Then the ritual of vows begins! We make promises to ourselves about exercise, what we will give up, and how much water we are going to drink.
Next the Judge and jury show up and the trial in our heads begin. When it is all said and done we are deemed guilty and sentenced to the dungeon of diets!
If you are not one belonging to this exclusive club you need to get up and do a happy dance right now! Do it!
Just as physical weight can creep onto us and slow us down affecting our health, Hebrews 12:1 points out that there is “weight” that can hinder us spiritually.
“. . . let us throw off every weight that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus . . .”
Weight hinders. Sin easily entangles.
His answer to being “overweight” for our spiritual race is “throw it off!”
It sounds easy enough, drop the back-pack, take off the heavy jacket, and finally rid yourself of that enormous purse!
Running a race stripped down requires trust. Will there be water along the way offered to the runners? Will there be first aid care if I fall or incur an injury? Will there be someone to run it with so that I am not alone? Will I be cared for if I succumb to exhaustion and cannot continue this leg?
Running stripped down is letting go of your independence from God, your need to be your own provision, your own safety net, and fear of being left in your own pain.
The race then becomes about one thing, running to get to the finish line.
I love watching the Amazing Race, and I am always amazed at the giant back-packs they carry through the most adverse conditions. This season, one young woman had a curling iron and blow drier in her back-pack! She realized that what she could not live without was actually interfering with her ability to stay in the race! As you and I run this race called faith and life, what could hinder our success?
When I am weighted down with envy, apathy, anger, pain . . . If I don’t “throw it off” I will become easily entangled in sin.
The weights we carry in our hearts, minds, and souls will not only slow us down making the race so much more difficult, but it will veer us off course and onto the wrong track. We then can find ourselves running a race we never intended to be a part of.
It has happened to all of us.
Paul’s answer . . . Keep our eyes on Jesus! Angry?
Look to Jesus! In pain? Look to Jesus! Caught on the wrong track? Eyes back on Jesus! This defies feelings. It crucifies our longing to be justified and righted in life’s circumstances. Eyes on Jesus will cure self-pity, self-loathing, self! Choosing to look to Jesus, eyes fixed, unwavering is a choice made one stride, one breath at a time.
Easy, no . . . but possible? Definitely!
For I can do everything through Christ who gives me strength. Phil 4:13
What weights could we be carrying that would hinder our ability to run this spiritual race well?
